Ithaca Chapter

The purpose of GWIS is to promote gender equality in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and to provide both gender-based and non gender-based support, networking, and recognition opportunities to scientists both at Cornell University and nationally.

We recognize that women have historically been disadvantaged in STEM, and that all genders deserve equal representation, opportunities, and responsibilities in STEM. This organization consists of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty who are involved in technology, engineering, mathematics, and the physical, natural, and social sciences.

The history of Graduate Women in Science dates back to the founding of the group at Cornell in 1921. Initially established as a fraternity for women in science known Sigma Delta Epsilon, GWIS became a national organization and expanded to include chapters at other colleges and universities. Today, after almost 100 years, it has grown to encompass dozens of chapters and an international branch.
